INTRODUCTION
Anchors for Public Health and Nutrition Initiative (APHNI) successfully conducted a one-day sensitization program on Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) at Gombe Main Market. The outreach focused on educating caregivers, particularly market women, on early detection, prevention, and management of malnutrition among children under five years.
OBJECTIVES
– To educate caregivers on the causes and signs of SAM
– To promote early detection and timely health-seeking behavior
– To provide nutritional support using locally prepared solutions
– To address misconceptions and cultural beliefs about malnutrition
TARGET AUDIENCE
Approximately 100 market women and caregivers with children aged 6–59 months.
ACTIVITIES
– Health education and sensitization talk (English & Hausa)
– Distribution of locally prepared therapeutic nutrition support
– Community engagement
OUTCOMES
– Increased awareness of SAM among caregivers
– Improved understanding of early warning signs
– Positive behavioral change toward seeking early medical help
– Community engagement in child nutrition practices and strengthened trust between APHNI and the local community
CONCLUSION
The sensitization program was successfully implemented and contributed meaningfully to addressing Severe Acute Malnutrition in the community. APHNI remains committed to improving child health outcomes and supporting vulnerable populations through sustainable interventions.
